Nouveau départ du Ruston new start

Le petit locotracteur Ruston est toujours l'objet de notre attention. Son système de lubrification fonctionnait mal et les travaux de vérification ont été poursuivis avec résultat.
  The little Ruston engine is still under our attention. Its lubricating system was working poorly and checks were continued with some results.

Le nettoyage du filtre à peigne avait déjà révélé un encrassement extrême, le moteur a donc été partiellement rempli de fuel pendant plusieurs mois pour décoller un peu cette crasse. La photo ci-dessous montre ce qui restait dans le carter après vidange. C'est le résultat de plusieurs années sans tourner, d'utilisation sans vidange régulière, et avec un filtre à peigne à l'efficacité toute relative. En l'état, il n'était possible d'obtenir que 0,2 bar de pression d'huile, très insuffisante mais déjà mieux qu'avant quand il n'y avait rien.
  Cleaning the comb filter revealed an extreme dirty condition, the engine was the partially filled with fuel for months to unstick this dirt. the picture here under shows what remained in the carter after emptying. This is the result of numerous years without running, of running without regular oil change, and use with a com filter of relative efficiency. As is, the system gave a pressure of only 0,2 bar, clearly not enough but already better than before when there was none.

Après remontage et complément en huile, un essai a montré une pression d'huile de 1,2 bar, dans la parfaite moyenne des engins de ce type. L'engin peut désormais être utilisé avec confiance pour ce qui est de la lubrification, mais d'autres points restent à améliorer, c'est en projet.
  After reassembly and oil complement, a test showed a pressure of 1,2 bar, in the perfact average of these engines series. The engine can now be used with peace of mind regarding the lubrication, but other things remain to be improved, so is our project.

Le petit locotracteur Ruston "Le breton" a retrouvé sa configuration d'origine après quelques travaux.
The little Ruston engine "Le breton" is back in its original shape after some work.

 Le réservoir de liquide de refroidissement était trop corrodé pour être valablement réparé par soudure ou masticage, il a donc été entièrement reconstruit.
The coolant tank was too badly corroded to be efficiently repaired by welding or putty, so it has been entirely reconstructed from scratch.

 Les joints de radiateurs ont finalement tous été remplacés par des modèles moulés en polyuréthane par nos soins. Leur dureté s'est révélée adaptée au besoin, le moule est conservé soigneusement car s'il est nécessaire de les démonter, ils ne pourront être réutilisés car trop déformés.
The radiator seals have finally been all replaced by new ones molded in polyurethan compound by ourselves. Their hardness has proven suitable to the need, the mold is kept secure because if we have to disassemble again, it would be necessary to mold new seals to replace the too distorted ones.

 Le remontage a demandé pas mal d'ajustage pour que radiateurs, réservoir, ventilateur et tôles puissent s'assembler correctement. Il apparaît malheureusement que l'un des roulements neufs est trop serré dans son logement et que la courroie est trop tendue; le roulement est trop sollicité et fait déjà du bruit...
Reassembly required a lot of adjusting for the radiators, tank, blower and sheets can fit together. Unfortunately, it appears that one of the new ball bearings suffers of a too narrow fitting and that the new belt is too tighten. The bearing is overstressed and already makes noise...

 Les essais statiques et sur voies de service étant satisfaisants, l'engin a été déployé en ligne pour un train de travaux. Dans cet emploi, le Ruston est plus efficace qu'un Decauville.
Tests on static and on service track being satisfactory, the engine has been sent on main line for a special train to work on some sleepers. In such use, it is more efficient than a Decauville.

 Il reste encore un gros travail de ponçage avant de passer à la peinture de finition. L'apprêt permet néanmoins de rendre l'engin plus présentable en attendant l'étape suivante. Alex nous a même fait des marquages provisoires !
It remains a huge sanding work prior to finish paint. The protective coat allows to get the engine more pleasant to look at in waiting the next step. Alex even painted temporary markings !

La remise en état n'est pas terminée, loin de là, mais le fait d'avoir réussi la remise en route et d'avoir fiabilisé le refroidissement permet d'envisager la suite avec la satisfaction d'avoir un engin en état de marche à présenter en retour de la confiance qui nous a été témoignée quand on nous l'a confié.
Restoration is far from being complete but this successful repair and the colling system secured allow us to prepare for the next round with the satisfaction to have a running engine to show off in return of the confidence we were granted when the engine was placed in our hands.

Le Ruston voit sa tôlerie avant neuve progresser lentement mais sûrement. Yves-André a offert une poignée de vis à tête fraisée pour reproduire l'assemblage d'origine du carter de courroie. Les logements ont donc été réalisés pour noyer ces têtes de vis. La cornière supérieure a été également reproduite et mise en place, montrant alors toute l'utilité des trous oblongs pour pouvoir reposer la grille frontale. Une rangée de trous a été en partie traitée à la lime, le reste sera fait avec une fraise motorisée...
The Ruston engine has its new front panel slowly completed. Yves-André offered some taper head screws to reproduce the original assembly of the belt protection. Chamfers have been machined to accomodate these screws. The upper square angle bar has been reproduced also and mounted, then showing the need of oblong holes in order to fix the blower protection grid. A row has been partially filed by hand, the rest will be with a powered tool...

Le TMB30 Decauville ex Cemnad (maintenant AMD pour Amis du Musée Decauville), aux mains de Jonathan, a été grandement révisé: gros nettoyage, diverses réparations, reconstruction du circuit de refroidissement... et un essai de démarrage a été mené le 6 juillet tracté par un TMB15. Un seul cylindre a bien voulu fonctionner sur les deux mais cela permettait déjà d'entretenir la rotation. Cela fait très plaisir de voir cet engin reprendre vie quand on a connu son état le jour de sa récupération. La culasse du cylindre récalcitrant a été déposée pour chercher l'origine du problème. Une semaine plus tard, ça fonctionne enfin mais il faut toujours un autre engin pour le démarrage...
The TMB30 Decauville ex Cemnad (now AMD standing for Amis du Musée Decauville / Friends of the Decauville Museum), in the hands of Jonathan, has been largely overhauled: strong cleaning, several repairs, rebuilding of the coolant circuit. A start-up trial has been conducted on july 6th with the help of a TMB15 for a push-start. Only one cylinder ignited but it allowed to maintain the rotation. It is really pleasant to see this engine live again knowing its bad condition when reclaimed. The cylinder head has been removed to seek out the trouble. One week later, at last it runs but an other engine is still needed for start...

Le "Paquebot", quant à lui, a de nouveau une cabine et reprend donc forme, laissant espérer une remise en service à relativement court terme.
The "Paquebot" has now a new cabin and takes its shape, giving hope to be back in service under rather short term.

La saison des travaux a repris sur le locotracteur Ruston, bien que la préparation ne se soit pas vraiment interrompue. L'achat d'un élastomère polyuréthane bi-composant permet de réaliser le moulage de nouveaux joints pour les radiateurs, d'une dureté satisfaisante cette fois.
The working season has resumed for the Ruston engine, though preparation was not really stopped. The purchase of a two part polyurethan compond allows to mold new seals for the radiators, with a correct hardness this time.

 La tôle de protection du ventilateur/courroie étant très fortement corrodée, des pièces neuves ont été reproduites à l'identique.
The steel sheets protecting the fan blower and its drivebelt being severly corroded, new parts have been made identical.

 

Ce n'est qu'une première étape, loin d'être terminée, mais elle avance bien et les résultats sont prometteurs.
This is only a first step, far to be complete, but it goes well and results are promising.

En dehors de la période estivale d'exploitation commerciale du réseau, les travaux continuent, même loin du réseau.
When the summer commercial service is off, we are still working, even from far away.

Le Ruston a ainsi bénéficié de quelques travaux de restauration sur des pièces démontées après les essais de 2013. En particulier sur le système d'alimentation en carburant et sur le circuit de refroidissement.
The Ruston engine received some restoration work on parts disassembled after the 2013 tests. The subjects are the fuel and coolant systems.

Tout a commencé par une recherche de documents, trouvés en Angleterre auprès du Moseley Railway Trust grâce à qui nous disposons maintenant du catalogue des pièces détachées et d'informations sur la conduite de l'engin. Ces documents vont nous permettre de dater approximativement la construction, en l'absence des plaques signalétiques.
All started with a search for litterature, found courtesy of the Moseley Railway Trust which gave us spare parts catalogue and informations on using the engine. These documents will help us to estimate the age of the machine because it has no plates hence no serial number.

Julien s'est procuré un bloc de filtration de carburant neuf, compatible avec ceux déjà en service sur les autres locomotives diesel de Rillé, et l'a posé à la place de celui d'origine qui fuyait.
Julien bought a brand new fuel filter system of the same type already in use on other diesel engines at Rillé and installed it in place of the former one badly leaking.

Nicolas a entièrement démonté le ventilateur pour en remplacer les roulements à billes. Au passage, une ailette de fortune a été remplacée par un exemplaire plus adapté et reposée par rivetage à chaud. Les pièces ont été sablées et préparées à l'antirouille.
Nicolas entirely dismantled the fan blower for bearings replacement. During this operation, a fan blade has been replaced by a better one and secured with hot rivets. The pieces have been sandblasted and sprayed with rustproof primer paint.

Locotracteur Ruston en restauration - Ruston engine under restoration

Le locotracteur Ruston, dit "Le Breton", est resté pendant de nombreuses années hors service après démontage et arrêt des travaux. Pendant l'été 2013, Julien et Nicolas ont entrepris son remontage. L'objectif était de savoir s'il était possible de le remettre en marche.

The Ruston engine called "Le Breton", has been waiting for years after disassembly and interruption. During the 2013 summer, Julien and Nicolas resumed the work. The goal was to know if it could be back running.

Il a fallu beaucoup d'ajustements pour remonter l'engin sans documentation mais cela a pu être fait de manière temporaire pour des essais, lesquels ont permis de constater de nombreux problèmes qu'il serait trop long d'énumérer ici mais qui ont été recensés pour un programme de remise en état.

Lots of adjustments were needed to rebuild the engine without any documents to help, but it was done for temporary tests, which allowed to spot many trouble, too numerous to be mentioned here but listed for further repairs.

Les essais ont montré un fonctionnement remarquable qui a incité à poursuivre les travaux, ils sont effectués lors des passages à Rillé mais se préparent à distance grâce aux échanges sur internet.

Tests showed remarkable runs, calling for continuing work. It is done at each passage at Rillé but is prepared from home thanks to contacts through internet.
